Village churches welcome new Curate - 15th Jan '10

Two churches in Peasedown St John and Wellow have appointed their first ever Curate.

St John’s Peasedown and St Julian’s Wellow both come under the leadership of local Vicar, the Revd Matthew Street. The village churches are part of the same Benefice, which allows them to work together and share resources.

The newest edition to benefice team is Evelyn-Lee Barber, an independent ordinand who will be working in both villages over the next three years in various aspects of community life.

Evelyn, who trained at St Mellitus College in London, said:

“I’m excited about my new role in Peasedown St John and Wellow. Both churches are very active in the community which will enable me to meet lots of new people.

Working with Matthew Street, the staff team and Church Wardens will help me to learn so much about the intricacies of church leadership and what day-to-day parish life is like.

Hopefully, by the end of my curacy here I will feel fully resourced and equip to lead my own church.”

Evelyn’s appointment is being sponsored by the joint partnership between St John’s Church and Bath City Church at the Forum in Bath, who have been working together for a number of years on a range of projects and initiatives.

The Revd Matthew Street will act as Evelyn’s supervisor and mentor. He commented:

“Evelyn will be involved locally in a training capacity. She’ll be giving talks and leading services as part of our new ‘Bridging the Gap’ sermon series.

During her time here she will observe all aspects of church life from conducting baptisms, wedding and funerals as well as coming along to observe staff, and Parochial Church Council meetings.

May I encourage residents in both Wellow and Peasedown to make Evelyn feel welcome and say hello when they see her about?”

Mrs Lee-Barber (pictured right) will spend half of her week on her studies and the other half in the area learning and doing practical things.

She’s married to Chris and they have two daughters, Frances and Isobel and is a keen tennis player.
